It’s a deal that needs structuring, a risk that needs managing, a decision that has to hold up later, which happens to need legal form. James Reich, an Associate at Butler McDermott Lawyers, practices mostly in that space.
Study Built Around the Work
James studied law at the University of Queensland from 2014 to 2019, completing a dual degree, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) alongside a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He later completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at QUT, and a Master of Laws specialising in Business Law and Transactions at the College of Law.
Why Commercial Law
James practices primarily in commercial and corporate law. Asked what drew him to it, his answer is about the kind of problem it lets him solve.
“It allows me to solve complex problems for businesses in a practical and strategic way,” he says. “I enjoy working closely with clients to understand their objectives and helping them navigate legal issues while supporting their broader commercial goals.”
He points to the mix the work draws on, analytical thinking, commercial strategy, and relationship-building, as what he finds particularly rewarding.
A Regulatory Landscape That Keeps Shifting
Even in a relatively short career so far, James has watched the compliance side of commercial law grow considerably.
“One of the biggest changes has been the increasing complexity of regulatory compliance and risk management,” he says. “Businesses are now required to navigate a broader range of obligations, including privacy laws, cyber security risks, employment compliance requirements, and evolving governance expectations.”
Technology has changed the practice of law itself alongside it. “Clients expect faster turnaround times, greater accessibility, and practical advice that is tailored to their commercial objectives,” James says.
What He Enjoys Most
“What I enjoy most is helping clients achieve meaningful outcomes,” he says. “Whether it’s assisting with the purchase or sale of a business, resolving a commercial issue, or helping a client manage legal risk, I enjoy providing practical solutions that give clients confidence to move forward.”

Outside of work, James spends time with his wife and daughter, travels, and plays sport, particularly futsal and tennis.
