When clients meet Jannah Riley, one of the first things they notice is her calm confidence. She has that rare ability to take a messy dispute, pull it apart, and show clients a clear, structured way forward. For someone stepping into the litigation world during some of the most disruptive years in recent memory, Jannah brings perspective, discipline, and a genuine commitment to helping clients feel supported in difficult moments.
A Legal Journey Shaped by Curiosity and Commitment
Jannah studied her Bachelor of Laws through CQU, beginning her degree in 2017 while living in Yeppoon. When COVID hit, she didn’t slow down. Instead, she continued her studies while travelling across Europe in a van – balancing coursework, shifting time zones and patchy Wi-Fi. That experience sharpened her resilience, adaptability and self-discipline, traits she now brings into her litigation practice. She graduated in 2022.
Why Litigation? Because Every Matter Tells a Story
Jannah chose litigation because she enjoys the variety and the intellectual challenge it brings. No two disputes are the same, and the broad nature of litigation means she is constantly exposed to new industries, situations and personalities. She’s particularly drawn to the structured, methodical nature of the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules, appreciating how a clear procedural framework helps guide even the most complex disputes.
Even in her early career, she has already witnessed meaningful legal change – including the introduction of the serious harm threshold under the Defamation Act 2005, a reform that has reduced frivolous claims and refined the scope of defamation litigation. It’s a shift she sees as a positive step toward clarity and fairness in the system.
What Jannah Enjoys Most: Helping Clients Regain Control
Most clients don’t come to a litigation solicitor because life is going smoothly. They come because something has gone wrong – a dispute, a breakdown in communication, a claim that needs answering.
Jannah’s favourite part of her role is giving clients clarity at a time when everything feels uncertain. She takes pride in identifying potential solutions, explaining each step in plain language, and building a relationship of trust that reassures clients they’re not facing their situation alone.
A Culture That Makes All the Difference
When asked what sets Butler McDermott Lawyers apart, Jannah doesn’t hesitate:
It’s the people.
She describes the firm’s culture as unmatched – a diverse, collaborative team where everyone brings their own strengths and experiences. For clients, that means access to the right lawyer for the right matter, backed by a team committed to excellence.
Life Beyond the Law
While Jannah hasn’t pursued additional accreditations just yet, there’s a good reason: she has welcomed two children in the past three years. Balancing motherhood with the early stages of a legal career has shaped her perspective, added maturity to her practice, and strengthened her ability to empathise with clients navigating stressful situations of their own.
Jannah’s Approach in a Sentence?
Structured, steady, and client-focused – she brings order to complexity and confidence to uncertainty.
If you’re facing a dispute and need guidance from someone who combines strategy with genuine care, Jannah Riley is ready to help you understand your options and move forward with clarity.
